Yellow Play-Doh in a can, shown on a white background

Yellow Play Dough

Single can of yellow modelling dough, rolled into the small golden balls that become the latkes.

Craft Sticks

One hundred jumbo craft sticks; painted black, one becomes the handle of the pan.

Tempera Paint Sticks

Quick-drying, washable paint sticks; one black stick colors the craft stick handle with no brush and no mess.

Cardstock Paper

White 80 lb cardstock, sturdy enough to cut into the 3 inch circle that is the base of the pan.

Wood Craft Spoons

Mini wooden spoons that glue onto the foil as the spatula for turning the latkes.

Four Elmer's CraftBond extra strength glue sticks

Extra-Strength CraftBond Glue Sticks

Four extra-strength glue sticks that hold the foil, handle, spoon and Play-Doh latkes in place.

Aluminum Foil

A roll of everyday aluminum foil, glued onto the cardstock circle so the pan looks shiny.

Instructions

Eight steps, one pan of latkes.

Make the pan first, then roll and press the dough, and glue the latkes on last.

Color or paint the craft stick black

Cut the cardstock paper into a circle with a 3 inch diameter

Glue foil onto the paper circle

Glue the stick to the underside of the circle so half of it sticks out, making the pot "handle"

Glue the craft spoon onto the center of the foil circle - this will be the "spatula"

Form 3-4 small balls of Play-Dough

Gently press the balls until they are small round circles resembling golden latkes

Glue the Play-Dough "latkes" onto the foil pot, with one on the "spatula"

The practical bits

Why Play-Doh for the latkes?

Because it rolls and presses like real latke batter, little hands can shape it with no tools, and it glues onto the foil pan once the balls are flattened into small golden rounds.

Ages

3‑6

Preschoolers roll the dough and press the latkes; a grown-up can cut the cardstock circle.

Time

30 minutes

Most of it is rolling and gluing, with a few minutes for the foil to set.

Can we play with it afterwards?

Yes, it makes a small pretend kitchen. Keep the latkes on the pan, and let the glue dry fully before the first round of frying.
