What do I actually need to buy for Sukkos?
Working backwards from the week itself: the sukkah, schach and a lulav and etrog set; then flooring, lighting, a table and chairs; then decorations; then the outdoor-eating pieces — a portable sink, serving carts, food covers. The first group is essential, the second makes the sukkah usable, and the third is what makes it feel like Yom Tov.
When should I start shopping for Sukkos?
Earlier than feels necessary. Sukkos falls five days after Yom Kippur, so the window between the Yamim Noraim and Sukkos is short and busy — and lulav and etrog sets, sukkah kits and schach sell out first. Ordering before Rosh Hashana leaves room for delivery delays and for whatever turns out to be missing from last year’s boxes.
How much does it cost to set up a sukkah?
It varies enormously, but the useful way to think about it is that the sukkah, schach and lulav and etrog are the recurring costs, while flooring, lighting, furniture and decorations are largely a one-time purchase that gets reused for years. Most families build up over several Sukkos rather than buying everything at once.
What’s worth buying once and reusing?
Flooring, lighting, furniture, wall art and decorations — all of it stores and comes out again. Buy those for durability rather than price. The genuinely disposable categories are tableware and anything that goes on the table, where the whole point is that it does not come back.
