Sukkah lighting questions
What kind of lighting works best in a sukkah?
Plug-in fixtures, almost always. A sukkah has no wiring, so anything that hangs needs to reach an outlet on its own cord — which is what every chandelier and pendant on this page is built to do. Combine one hanging fixture for the table with string or fairy lights around the walls for the atmosphere.
Are these lights safe to use outdoors?
Use fixtures rated for outdoor or damp locations, keep the connection point sheltered, and run the cord where nobody will catch a foot on it. An outdoor-rated extension cord and a GFCI outlet are both worth the small extra cost. Bring anything not rated for outdoor use inside if heavy rain is forecast.
How do I hang a chandelier in a sukkah?
From the frame, not the schach — the schach should stay undisturbed and it will not carry weight. Most sukkah frames take an S-hook or a cable tie at a crossbar. Check the fixture's weight against what your frame can hold, and hang it high enough that nobody stands up into it.
What size light do I need for my sukkah?
Scale it to the table rather than the sukkah. A single pendant or a 6-light chandelier suits a table for six to eight; a long table or a large sukkah wants a 12-light fixture, or two smaller ones spaced along the length, so you are not lighting one bright island and eating in the dark at the far end.
