Wind spinner and suncatcher questions
Where do you hang wind spinners in a sukkah?
From the frame or a crossbar, somewhere with enough clearance to turn freely and well above head height at the table. Do not hang them from the schach itself. A spot near an opening catches more air, which is what makes a spinner worth hanging at all.
Will wind spinners and suncatchers survive being outside?
The metal and crystal pieces here are made for gardens, so a week of Sukkos weather is well within what they are built for. Bring them in at the end of Yom Tov rather than leaving them out for the winter, and they will come back out year after year.
Do the solar lanterns need direct sun to work?
They need daylight on the panel, and direct sun charges them fastest. In a sukkah that is mostly shaded by schach, hang solar pieces near an opening or on the sunniest wall — or charge them outside the sukkah during the day and hang them for the evening.
Are these safe with young children around?
Hang them high and out of reach. Crystal suncatchers and metal spinners have edges and hanging cords, and both are irresistible to small hands. High up near the schach line, where they catch the light and nobody can reach them, is where they look best anyway.
