Sukkah flooring questions
What is the best flooring for a sukkah?
It depends what you are covering. Over grass or dirt, interlocking foam or deck tiles lift you off the wet ground and level out the surface. Over an existing patio or deck, a sheet vinyl roll or a waterproof outdoor rug is faster to lay and quicker to pick up at the end of Yom Tov.
Will sukkah flooring survive the rain?
The foam tiles, deck tiles and vinyl roll on this page are all waterproof and made for outdoor use — rain runs off or through rather than soaking in. What matters more is what is underneath: if water pools beneath the tiles, lift them to dry after the rain instead of leaving them down.
How do I work out how much flooring to buy?
Measure the length and width of your sukkah floor in feet and multiply for the square footage, then add roughly 10%. Interlocking tiles are sold by the number of tiles and each carton lists its coverage, so divide your square footage by the coverage per carton and round up.
Can I store it and use it again next year?
Yes, and that is the reason to buy rather than improvise. Foam and deck tiles unclip and stack flat, and vinyl rolls back onto its tube. Let everything dry fully before it goes into storage — packing damp flooring away is how you find mildew waiting for you next Sukkos.
