Instructions

Six steps, and no mess at all.

Double-bag first, then the honey, then the beads — and tape the top last, along the whole sealed edge rather than a strip in the middle.

Put one ziploc bag into another to create a double bag. This will prevent leakage.

Fill the inner bag with enough honey to spread a thick layer over the entire inside of the bag.

Repeat several times

Put different small items - i.e. orbees, beads - into each honey bag. For extra oomph, use Rosh Hashanah themed beads!

Use a sharpie to decorate the outside of each bag with Rosh Hashanah related pictures

What age are sensory bags for?

Babies and toddlers, roughly one to four. It is built for the age that wants to touch everything and cannot yet be trusted with honey — they get the squish, the color and the beads moving under their fingers with nothing to clean up.

Is it actually mess-free?

Yes, if it is sealed properly. The honey and beads go inside a double bag and the open edge is taped down with heavy packing tape, so there is no way in. Tape the bag to a table or a window and it stays where you put it.

How do I stop the bag leaking?

Double bag it, press the air out before sealing, and run packing tape along the full sealed edge rather than a strip in the middle. The tape is doing the real work — a zip seal alone will not survive a determined toddler.

How long do they last?

Several days, and they can be made a week ahead. Keep them out of direct sun, which warms the honey and softens the seal. When the bag finally gives, throw it out rather than repairing it.
