Instructions

Six steps, one afternoon.

Work on the lid first, then the letters, then fill in around them — that order keeps the צדקה straight and centred.

The It's Yom Tov boy waving
1
Trace the jar lid onto the crystal sheet sticker.
2
Cut out the circle and stick it onto the lid.
3
Using a sharp knife, poke a hole through the sheet sticker where the lid slot is.
Grown-ups only
4
Use small strips of rhinestone ribbon to form the letters צדקה.
5
Stick the letters onto the side of the jar.
6
Decorate the side of the lid and the rest of the jar with rhinestone stickers, tape, ribbon and any other embellishments.

Grown-up guide

The practical bits
What is a tzedakah box used for?
It is a box kept at home for coins given to charity, traditionally before candle lighting. Making one is how the habit starts for a child — the box is theirs, they decorated it, and they are the one who fills it.
Ages
4+
Everything is peel-and-stick.
Time
< 1 hr
No glue, no drying time.
What age can make this?
The decorating suits almost any age, which is the appeal: rhinestone stickers, gems and lace ribbon are all peel-and-stick, so a four-year-old can do the whole thing unaided. Older children take it further with ribbon work and pattern rather than covering the jar at random.
How long does it take?
Under an hour, with no drying time, because everything is adhesive rather than glued. That makes it the craft to reach for when there is an afternoon to fill and no time for anything that needs to set overnight.
What do you do with it after Rosh Hashanah?
Keep it out and keep using it — that is the point. The box works all year, and emptying it for a cause the child chooses is what makes the habit stick rather than the decorating.
